How many tourists visit Egypt each year, with the source behind every figure

According to the Ministry of Tourism and Antiquities, in the year-end summary the State Information Service published on January 3, 2026, Egypt received nearly 19 million tourists in 2025. The ministry describes that as growth of roughly a fifth over 2024, about four times the world average UN Tourism estimated for the year.

The year before was also a record. Ahram Online, citing the tourism minister in January 2025, reported 15.7 million tourists in 2024, up from 14.9 million in 2023.

It helps to know what is being counted: foreign visitors who spend at least one night in the country. A Saudi family spending August in Alexandria counts the same as an American couple on a Nile cruise. The total measures pressure on airports and hotels, not how crowded a temple will be the morning you visit.

The stated official goal, as the government told Ahram Online, is 30 million tourists a year by 2028. The trend since 2022 is steep, and every planning consequence below follows from it.

The full series since 2010: the old peak, the 2016 trough and the recovery

For the long view we combine two sources and label each row. The World Bank series of international tourism arrivals, which draws on UN Tourism data, runs through 2019. From 2020 onward we use the Egyptian ministry's figures as reported by Ahram Online and the State Information Service. Treat the join between 2019 and 2020 as a seam.

In short: Egypt lost a decade between 2011 and 2019, bottomed out in 2016 with barely a third of its 2010 visitors, then went from 11.7 million to nearly 19 million in three years. That speed explains everything else on this page: the country now hosts far more travelers than its hotels, boats and airports were built for, and the pinch shows up first where an American cultural traveler wants to be.

The record years and what is behind them

Three engines pushed the 2025 number. The first is air access. According to the official 2025 summary carried by the State Information Service, charter flight traffic to Egyptian tourist destinations rose by almost a third during the year, tourist flights operated from 193 cities worldwide, and the airports receiving the most tourists were Cairo, Hurghada, Sharm El Sheikh and Marsa Alam.

The second engine is heritage. The ministry counted 18.6 million visits by foreign tourists to archaeological sites and museums in 2025, a third more than in 2024, excluding the Grand Egyptian Museum and the National Museum of Egyptian Civilization. Since a beach visitor rarely sets foot in a temple, that number comes mostly from cultural travelers.

The third is policy: Minister Sherif Fathy attributed part of the 2025 growth to easier visa procedures and Egypt's presence at 33 international travel fairs, per trade press coverage in November 2025.

Why the 30 million target will not arrive on its own

Officials have been candid that demand is not the constraint; seats and beds are. For you, that means quality inventory on good dates sells out earlier than it did five years ago.

Where Egypt's tourists come from: the top source markets

Ahram Online, using ministry data in its January 2025 report, listed the leading source markets for 2024 in this order: Germany, Russia, Saudi Arabia, the United Kingdom, Poland, Italy, the Czech Republic, the United States and France. The United States is eighth on that list, the only market from outside Europe and the Gulf.

• Germany, Poland, the Czech Republic and the United Kingdom are charter markets to the coast. They fill Hurghada, Marsa Alam and Sharm El Sheikh from October to April and increasingly in summer.
• Russia has returned strongly, almost entirely to the Red Sea.
• Saudi Arabia and the Gulf travel in summer and during school holidays to Cairo, Alexandria and the North Coast. They are why July and August are huge months despite the heat.
• Italy, France and the United States are the cultural markets: Nile cruise, pyramids, Luxor and Aswan, with the Red Sea as an add-on at the end.

The split matters because the two groups barely compete for the same beds. A record number of Germans in Hurghada does not fill your cruise from Aswan to Luxor; Italians, French, Americans and Brits landing on the same fall and spring weeks do. How many Americans visit Egypt each year

There is an official figure and it is recent. Speaking at the United States Tour Operators Association conference in early December 2025, Minister Sherif Fathy said US arrivals to Egypt had risen by about a fifth during the year to nearly 520,000 tourists, as reported by Arab News on December 7, 2025. Trade coverage of the 2024 results put the American market above 500,000 that year too.

The most recent data point is softer. The State Information Service reported on August 1, 2026 that US arrivals rose by a small margin in the first half of 2026, and that American tour operators were reporting strong bookings for 2027 ahead of the total solar eclipse expected over Luxor on August 2, 2027. A market still growing, just not at the pace of 2025.

Two things follow. First, you are in the most cultural segment Egypt receives: almost every US visitor does the pyramids, Cairo's museums and a Nile cruise. Red Sea beach tourism versus Nile cultural tourism

Official statistics do not separate beach from cultural tourists, but there are two solid clues. The clearest came as the country reopened after the pandemic: on May 16, 2021, Ahram Online reported the tourism minister's statement that around 17,500 tourists were arriving per day and that nearly two of every three landed at Sharm El Sheikh, Hurghada and Marsa Alam. The 2025 summary repeats the picture: the four airports leading arrivals are Cairo plus those same three Red Sea gateways.

The second clue is the monument count. If 18.6 million site visits were recorded in 2025 while two thirds of arrivals barely leave a resort, those visits come mostly from the six or seven million people on the cultural circuit, at several sites each. That is your segment, and it is the fastest growing one: a third more site visits against a fifth more arrivals.

The Red Sea has far more hotel capacity than the Nile and absorbs peaks with ease. The Nile has a finite number of boats, cabins and licensed guides, so growth bites there first. Hotel capacity: how many rooms Egypt has and why it matters to you

According to Ahram Online, citing the ministry in its January 2025 report, Egypt had just over 220,000 hotel rooms as of February 2024, and the government's plan was to add about 250,000 more and roughly double capacity within five to six years. With 15.7 million tourists the strain was already visible; with nearly 19 million in 2025 it is structural.

The distribution is uneven too. New rooms are going up on the Red Sea coast and in New Alamein, not in Luxor or Aswan, where quality supply grows mainly through refurbished cruise boats and new dahabiyas.

What this means on the Nile

The cruise fleet between Luxor and Aswan is effectively closed. Boats get refitted and a few launch each season, but nobody adds hundreds of cabins from one year to the next. Dahabiyas, with eight to ten cabins each, are scarcer still. In October, November, the Christmas fortnight and Easter, the top categories are gone before most Americans look at dates. The Grand Egyptian Museum and the airports: where capacity is being built

The single biggest investment is the Grand Egyptian Museum beside the Giza pyramids, officially opened on November 1, 2025. Before the opening the minister told Asharq Bloomberg, in comments carried by the State Information Service in October 2025, that it was receiving 5,000 to 6,000 visitors a day and was expected to handle around 5 million a year. It did better. On September 11, 2026 CairoScene reported, citing the government's 2025/2026 economic and social development plan, that the museum had recorded more than 6.5 million visitors since opening.

Two things follow: it is the most in-demand visit in the country, and it has a ceiling. Airports

• Cairo International: Ahram Online reported in October 2025 that the airport handled 28.96 million passengers in 2024. On October 22, 2025 the State Information Service announced a new Terminal 4 with capacity for about 30 million passengers a year and a build time of about four years.
• Sphinx International, west of Cairo: capacity raised to 1.2 million passengers a year, Ahram Online reported in October 2025. It is minutes from the pyramids and the museum.

Seasonality: how the visitors are spread across the year

Egypt does not publish a clean monthly table, but the cumulative figures the minister gave during 2025 reveal the rhythm. Trade coverage of the ministry's results put the first quarter at 3.9 million. The State Information Service, reporting the minister's remarks to Asharq Bloomberg on October 15, 2025, gave 8.7 million through June, 12.8 million through August and about 15 million by late September. The year closed at nearly 19 million. Subtract and you have the seasons.

Look at July and August: two months carry more than a fifth of the year. That is the Gulf and the beach, not the Nile, where Luxor highs routinely pass 104 F (40 C) and the temples empty out. The last four months are the busiest and coincide with the best weather. In Luxor and Aswan the real season runs from October to April, with peaks from mid-October to late November, over Christmas and New Year, and around Easter.

What these numbers mean for your trip

Statistics only matter if they change a decision. This is what we see from the inside, running trips every week.

• Crowds are real but local. Giza mid-morning, the Grand Egyptian Museum at midday and the Valley of the Kings between nine and eleven are packed. The fix is the clock: the pyramids of Giza at opening, the museum in the last two hours, the tombs before eight thirty. A private guide and vehicle can do that; a forty-seat coach cannot.
• Booking early is arithmetic. If arrivals grow by a fifth a year and rooms grow far less, every season more people chase the same inventory. For October, November, Thanksgiving, Christmas and Easter, choosing your boat and hotel four to five months out guarantees the category and the guide you want.
• The shoulder months are genuinely good. January after the first week, February, early March and September have pleasant weather in the south, winter daytime highs in Luxor around the 70s F (low 20s C), and far less pressure than November.
• Summer on the Nile is empty, and workable. Luxor is very hot and very quiet; an early start with a midday pool break works better than most people expect.
• Beach at the end, not the start. The Red Sea has capacity to spare and books later. Lock in the cruise and the guide first.

One last observation no official table records: Americans compete for a limited pool of Egyptian guides who speak natural, fluent English. In high season that is the first resource to run out, before the cabins. It is why we ask for your dates first.
